SORRENTO is situated on the Neapolitan Riviera, along with Postiano, Amalfi, Maiori and Ravello. This special area of Italy has been a favourite holiday haven since the time of the Roman emperors. It’s Piazza Tasso groups evocative sun-baked buildings with faded pink, blue and ochre walls. Close by, a Romenesque bell tower summons sun-worshipers to a ritual descent down 200 steps to Marina Piccola’s beach. A ravenous appetite can be satiated at one of the seafront restaurants or, making a steep ascent, enjoyed in the resort’s throbbing centre.
With culture hanging off every street corner, this is also an ideal base if you want to visit Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. Climb the most famous and only remaining active volcano in mainland Europe, before exploring the ruins of Pompeii, the Roman town destroyed by an eruption in 79AD.
With a temperate climate, terrific scenery, the Neapolitan Riviera is spellbinding. Set around the bay of Naples, gazing across sparkling blue seas. In the distance , the brooding slopes of Mount Vesuvius make for an impressive backdrop.
