Littlecote House is a superb 16th Century mansion with a story that spans literally thousands of years. In its various guises the property has played host to occupying Romans, a Tudor tryst and a Civil War army.
Here in 1535 Henry VIII wooed Jane Seymour, the lovers’ tryst recalled in the Great Hall by a fine decorative Cupid’s head. Yet this is just part of a rich narrative that spans the centuries. From the lovingly preserved Roman mosaic to the Dutch parlour, Littlecote is a warren of antiquity. Add to this the Jerusalem Stairs and the secret passage behind the library bookcase and the rooms where the D-Day landings were planned and you have an extensive afternoon of history on your hands.
Winter or summer, the gardens at Littlecote have something to offer. The north topiaried avenue epitomises the very essence of times past, while the herbaceous borders and the pretty lawns that run down to the burbling Kennet river will calm the soul. Look out for the remains of the Roman villa, and the restored Roman Orpheus Mosaic!
