Until 1909 Holme Lacy House was the family seat of the Earls of Chesterfield. It is believed it stands on the site of an abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St Thomas à Becket. Mentioned in the Domesday Book and owned by a courtier of William the Conqueror, an earlier house lent a bed to King Charles I and the present mansion was co-opted for cabinet meetings by prime minister Pitt the Elder.

Holme Lacy House is has a lakeside setting amid 20 acres of mature landscaped parkland, with a walled garden, a pond, topiary and hedges all intricately laid out with the eye of a draughtsman – typical of the eighteenth century style the house exemplifies.
Many of Holme Lacy House ’s fine interior features originate from this period, such as the exceptional plaster ceilings, the panelled, draped and ornate state rooms (some of which are now magnificent restaurants) and the grand main staircase. Look to the left of the staircase and you will see a door hidden in the panelling which leads to other ornate rooms.
