Greece Flight
Athens is approximately three and a half hours by plane from English airports and is served by many international airlines. Direct charter flights will take up to and above four hours to reach the most distant Greek islands from the most northerly outposts of the UK. Charter flights tend to be most expensive coinciding with the school holidays - July and August are peak season months. Scheduled flights from the UK will normally require a transfer in Athens or Thessaloniki to reach your ultimate destination.

Driving in Greece

Greece has a population of approximately 11 million people and the capital is Athens which is located in a relatively central position on the Greek mainland.
Athens Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is large and modern. Like much of the of the city's transport infrastructure, it was built with the 2004 Olympics in mind. An effective underground system was also contructed. This resulted in a huge number of ancient finds, many of which are displayed in the underground stations close to the location where they were found. Most tourists will want to stay close to the heart of Athens and Plaka is a perennially popular place for the weary tourist to rest their head. It houses many small hotels and lodgings, most of which are easy on the budget with the advantage of being only a stone's throw from the cultural and shopping areas of the city. Omonia is within walking distance, as is Syntagma square and parliament.
Athens is both the historical and modern capital of Greece and the visitor cannot walk more than a few metres before coming across classical and antiquarian architecture. Looking down from the top of the Acropolis sits the Parthenon, probably the most well known symbol of the history of the Greek state.
Island groups include the Dodecanese, Cyclades, Ionian, North Aegean, Saronic Gulf and Sporades.
Popular mediterranean destinations for the British tourist include the islands of Crete, Kos, Rhodes, Santorini, Corfu, Mykonos and Zakynthos.
Crete is the largest and most populous of Greece's islands and is the most southerly land mass of the Greek nation. It sits alone, approximately 40 minutes by plane from the country's capital, Athens. Crete's main city is Heraklion (Iraklion / Iraklio), second city is Xania (Chania / Hania) and each has an airport, although Nikos Kazantsakis Airport (Heraklion) has a larger share of arriving and departing passenger traffic. The island is large and consequently transfer times may still be substantial for some holiday destinations. Two of the most popular resorts for younger visitor to Crete are Malia and Hersonissos, both well renowned for a party atmosphere and well developed tourism industry. Each boasts plenty of large hotels, apartments and other accommodation options in locations that are easily accessible from Heraklion airport..
Rhodes and Kos sit close to the coast of Turkey in the Dodecanese group of islands. Kos Town on Kos and Faliraki on Rhodes are both popular with the younger visitors. Rhodes old town is a marvel of Venetian architecture with the old walls and fortifications largely intact. It has a warren of streets, a pleasant relaxing atmosphere and a selection of quirky shops, galleries and the like.
In the Cyclades Mykonos is probably best known for the gay holiday scene and the clubbing, whereas Santorini is a favourite for romantic honeymooners looking for that quintessential Greek island vista.
