CORFU
Lush mountain scenery, gorgeous sandy beaches lapped by inviting turquoise waters, a buzzing night life scene and a historically charming and busting capital, Corfu is the all time favourite Greek destination.
BEACHES
Backed by hills, the beautiful bays that border the island are diverse and plenty. The best sandy beaches are in the north around Sidan and Rhoda and are great for families, whilst a mixture of sand and shingle bays can be found along the east coast with a wide selection of water-sports particularly around Dassia and Gouvia.
EATING OUT
Fresh chargrilled fish and a crisp Greek salad served in a taverna on the sea front is an inexpensive and enjoyable way to taste the simple Greek cooking. For a typical island speciality try Sofrito (Beef or Veal in wine and garlic sauce). In Corfu Town you can sample a refreshing glass of 19th century style ginger beer, a legacy of British colonial rule.
SHOPPING
There’s no shortage of souvenir shops in any of the resorts, although an evening spent browsing through the medieval streets of Corfu Town is not to be missed. Lace, pottery, contemporary arts and jewellery are among the local crafts.
NIGHTLIFE
even the smaller resorts have their share of ample bars and eateries, whilst the busiest night life and an impressive choice of bars and night clubs can be found in Corfu Town and the coastal resorts of Gouvia and Dassia.
PLACES TO SEE
Two Venetian fortresses guard over Corfu Town, where narrow cobbled streets wind through the city amongst old world buildings reflecting a mixture of the islands British, French, Italian and Greek heritage. The much photographed monastery and pretty Mouse Island lie just off-shore at Kanoni.
GETTING AROUND
Bus services from Corfu Town to resorts in the north and south are fairly frequent during the day but can get quite crowded and delayed at the height of summer. Cutting across the island is more of a challenge - car hire is the best way to explore or taxis will often agree a price for a days excursion.
