Motorcycle Insurance In the last 6 months motorcycle premiums have risen by approximately 10% and are following a pattern which sees car insurance premiums at their highest levels ever, according to AA Insurance. The AA's Insurance Premium Index showed that car premiums have risen by 8% in the last year and more than 100% since 1994. Ian Crowder from AA Insurance said: “Motorcycle premiums had risen by 9 per cent in the same period.” “This suggests that motorcycle premiums are mirroring car premiums.” The reason for the increase, according to Ian Crowder, is down to the problem of uninsured drivers together with an increase in personal injury claims, fueled the growth in compensation culture. The Association of European Airlines say that British Airways reported more than 300,000 failing to arrive between April and June. How To Get Low Cost Car Insurance With inflation set to top 5% by the second quarter of 2009 (according to the Telegraph newspaper on 16 September) the cost of everything is going up and motor insurance is no exception. Thankfully, however, there are still ways to get low cost car insurance. It is not just the normal rise in the cost of living that affects such insurance. Insurers are paying out more and more each year on claims, especially personal injury claims. According to a UK Bodily Injury Awards Study, for example, payouts have gone up by 9.5% in each of the last ten years. The cost of fraudulent claims is also increasing the bills faced by insurers, who have little choice but to pass these costs on to the ordinary motorist. Add to that the unrecoverable costs arising from accidents caused by uninsured drivers (which the Association of British Insurers estimates to add a further £30 onto every honest car owner’s premiums), and it is easy to see why the price of motor insurance is rising so rapidly. Even then, the amount of premiums received by insurers is outweighed by the claims paid out – for every £100 received, it is estimated, insurers pay out £112 in claims (the only profit coming from the earnings made by investing the premiums received). So if the insurer has already pared down the price of motor insurance to the very minimum what can the ordinary motorist do to get low cost car insurance? This is essentially a question of reducing the risk taken on by the insurer. More careful drivers, make fewer claims and have a cleaner driving licence. Taking on a higher policy excess also helps to share the risk and can considerably reduce the premiums needed for a comparable level of cover. The greatest advantage enjoyed by the careful driver, of course, is the no claims discount, which can significantly cut the cost of premiums by between 30% and 60%. The sooner any driver can start building up towards the maximum no claims discount, therefore, the cheaper the next year’s premiums will become. For a modest additional premium – which can easily pay for itself in the event of just a single claim – the no claims discount can also be protected. Security of the vehicle against theft and vandalism also plays an important part in reducing the risk. Therefore, car alarms and immobilizers – which are comparatively cheap to install – will earn most car owners a valuable discount on their car insurance premiums and help them achieve low cost car insurance. The same applies to off-road parking, with those who can keep their vehicle on a driveway or in a garage overnight gaining further valuable discounts. Some models of motor car are more expensive to repair and higher performance vehicles are statistically at greater risk of being involved in accidents. These differences are reflected in the various categories into which insurers group vehicles for insurance purposes. The motorist anxious to cut car insurance costs will therefore choose to drive a car that fits into the lowest insurance category that continues to meet his or her motoring needs. |
