Credit Cards For Those With Adverse Credit
If you go back only a couple of years there was only really one main company prepared to issue a credit card to someone with less than desirable credit. Now as well as Capital One there are two more big players in this market, Vanquis and Aqua.
If you have had passed credit problems a credit card can be an excellent way to rebuild your credit and get some positive payment history. One thing to bear in mind with these cards is the extortionate interest rates due to the risk the lender is taking, anyone planning to take one on to rebuild credit are advised strongly to use it sparingly and pay the full balance each month.
If you don't trust yourself to use the card wisely, don't get one, and definitely never get a high interest credit card to dig yourself out of a hole, it'll just make it deeper in the long run.
If you just require a card for online transactions why not get a prepaid card instead, see further down the page for details.
Ade's Top Choice . . .
CapitalOne
CapitalOne have been in the adverse credit market for a long time so you do of course have the piece of mind to know they aren't a flash in the pan, this is the only one of the three who offer online account management which is a definite plus and as all have very similar acceptance and interest rates that is what make CapitalOne pip the other two the post.
CapitalOne Offer . . .
- no annual fee Up to £2,500 in spending power Credit limit increase A FREE choice of card design
- Spread your payments
The Interest on the Capital One Classic Visa is quite low compared to the Vanquis Card at 34.9% and their acceptance rate is high when compared to the Aqua card, the best balance we believe.

Aqua, part of SAV Credit Limited, specialise in only credit cards for those with a poor credit history and offer no 'high street' products. They are specialist lenders and take a closer look at your application to see if there's a way they can give you the credit you're looking for. They offer . . .

The Interest on the Aqua MasterCard is probably more favourable to those with poorer credit at 33.9%, 6% lower than the Vanquis Abacus card but also probably slightly harder to obtain.

Prepaid debit / credit cards
Prepaid cards offer an excellent alternative to credit cards and are ideal for those with less than perfect credit. There are no credit checks, no interest to pay and no chance of running into debt. Money can be loaded on to your prepaid card by cash, bank transfer or even another credit card, and because it is a Visa or MasterCard you can use it anywhere in the world and online.
They are all pretty much the same (pay on money, use as a credit card) so I won't go into too much detail, the main difference is the charging for setting up the card and making cash withdrawls and purchases. With this in mind I have linked through to a comparison chart on MoneySupermarket to allow you to compair these charges . . .
