Are there different types of travel insurance?
A good travel insurance policy gives you peace of mind, whether it's for a
single trip or to cover your annual travel insurance. Whilst buying an annual
insurance policy can be more expensive than a single trip policy, it does mean
that you don't have to worry about organising travel insurance each time you
travel. The other advantage to annual insurance is that if you have multiple
trips, it can work out cheaper in the long run.
Does an annual travel insurance policy have
restrictions?
In most cases annual insurance policies will limit the total number of days
you can travel. However, this is usually more than sufficient for the average
person. The number of days ranges from around 20 days to 90 days in more
generous policies. But remember, if you don't need this many, don't choose this
option as it may be more expensive.
Travel Insurance EHIC or E111
The E111 has now changed its name to the European Health Insurance Card
(EHIC). It is usually valid for 3 to 5 years and it covers any medical treatment
required on your trip. The EHIC travel card gives access to each country's state
provided medical treatment. You may have to make a contribution to the cost of
your care. Remember that the EHIC won't cover you if getting medical treatment
is the main purpose of your trip. The EHIC covers you for medical treatment that
becomes necessary while you're in an European Economic Area (EEA) country or
Switzerland.
The EEA consists of the European Union (EU) countries plus Iceland,
Liechtenstein and Norway. Switzerland applies the EHIC arrangements through an
agreement with the EU. The EHIC is valid in the following countries:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Cyprus (but not Northern Cyprus)
- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Estonia
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Iceland
- Ireland
- Italy
- Latvia

- Lithuania
