Car Reliability Update from UK Insurance Company Direct Line

Direct Line have released the latest research into new car reliability on UK roads. Japanese and Malaysian cars are at the top of the list, ahead of more expensive manufacturers from Germany and Sweden. This is in contrast the popular opinion which puts German cars at the top of the list. The Direct Line poll asked car drivers which cars they thought were the most mechanically reliable - Volkswagen, Mercedes and BMW topped the list.

Direct Line’s research shows the top five cars least likely to suffer mechanical breakdown are as follows:

1. Honda
2. Toyota
3. Mazda
4. Nissan
5. Proton

Direct Line Breakdown commissioned this research as they wanted to know if car drivers opinion was based on actual experience. Direct Line Breakdown offers specific prices for certain cars so drivers of reliable cars pay less. Car breakdown premiums start at just £35 per year. Emma Holyer, Spokesperson for Direct Line Breakdown, said: “This research shows how motorists tend to think the more expensive cars are more reliable which isn’t always the case. Only 1% of consumers thought Protons were trusty whereas it’s actually one of the most reliable cars on the market.“

Direct Line was the first major car insurance company to offer a tailored pricing approach for individual car drivers rather than the conventional approach of one price for all. Motorists switching from the AA and RAC Save 20% on average.

Whilst reliability of Japanese and Malaysian cars is excellent, the same cannot be said for their drivers. The Direct Line survey shows that the majority of all car breakdowns - across all makes of car - can be blamed on driver error in some form or another. As Christmas approaches, Direct Line Insurance company has announced that it will be increasing its home contents insurance to cover gifts. The Direct Line insurance cover will be raised by £5,000 or ten per cent of the sum insured, whichever is greater. Andrew Lowe, Head of Home Insurance at Direct Line, commented: "With all the extra possessions in the home, Christmas can be a popular time for burglaries so people need to make sure they are vigilant with their home security". After Christmas, some households may find that the value of their household contents has increased significantly and so it is worth reassessing home insurance policies to make sure you are not underinsured.
