American Express founded in Buffalo, New York 1850. It was originally intended to be a joint stock corporation. Some time later all american Express operations were moved to California. The company first made its HQ in a building called the TriBeCa section of Manhattan. During this period the company grew vast amounts and enjoyed prolonged periods of a virtual monopoly. During 1874 American Express relocated its HQ to 65 Broadway, the Financial District of Manhattan, where it still remains.
Nowadays the company is headed up by Kenneth Chenault after taking over from Harvey Golub.
