A brief account of the UK National Lottery:
The National Lottery is the largest lottery in the UK. Since 1994 it has been ran by the Camelot Group. The Lottery is regulated by 'The National Lottery Commission'. The National Lottery has become without doubt the most popular form of gambling in the UK.
All prizes which can be won from the National Lottery are paid to the winnder tax free. From every £1.00 which is spent on the Lottery 50P goes to the prize fund and 28P goes to 'a good cause'- the good causes are set out by parliament, 12P goes to the British government as duty and 5P goes to retailers as commission. On each game play Camelot recieves 4.5P, after costs have been deducted Camelot makes around 0.5P profit on each play.
There are twelve different 'spinning machines' that can be used to draw the National Lottery/Lotto draw. The machine and the set of balls used are selected, at random just before the draw. The names of the Lottery machines are as follows: Arthur, Merlin, Vyvyan, Lancelot, Galahad, Garnet, Topaz, Opal, Amethyst, Moonstone, Sapphire and Pearl. Retired machines include Guinevere. The ball sets to be used in a draw are chosen at random by number.
