The Nintendo DSi console was launched on Friday 3rd April 2009 as an upgraded version of the popular Nintendo DS Lite console. Handheld DS consoles makes them popular with parents who are happy to see their children occupied for hours in quiet amusement (especially on long car journeys), but the small footprint of the DS and DSi cartridges and that swapping of game cartridges can lead to the loss of expensive games through mislaying them. That is a big loss when games cost £25 on average.

R4i Adapter Card for the Nintendo DSi

What if you could store backups of all the games on a single Nintendo DSi Memory Adapter, keeping the original games in a drawer or on a shelf limiting the chance of kids losing or breaking the originals?

The R4i adapter for Nintendo DSi is a mini electronic card of tricks which is the same size as an original DS or DSi game cartridge, but also accepts flash card memory allowing you to upload files to it, which may be MP3s, videos or other multimedia files; depending upon the size of the R4 card memory, this could be dozens (to hundreds) of backed up games eliminating the need to swap game cartridges forever and allowing you to store the original games cartridges safely ensuring that your valuable investment is protected!

It isn’t actually practical for most people to backup their games themselves, however others have already done this for most games (maybe even all of them) already andif you search for “NDS Roms”, you will find them freely available on the internet.

Important Note: Whilst this means that you can easily acquire and play games even if you have not purchased them, I would expect any such activity to be illegal in most if not all jurisdictions. Therefore, whilst it is theoretically possible to download and play virtually every DS/DSi game ever published for free, I must caution that would certainly be in breach of copyright.

Recently Nintendo released a new firmware upgrade which rendered thse cards unusable in any DSi upgraded to v1.4. However, there is a new R4i version available that is compatible with a Nintendo DSi running v1.4 Firmware (follow the product links on this article).

and so far appears to have beaten the Nintendo software engineers : the R4i Adapter for Nintendo DSi. This new R4i adapter will work in exactly the same way as the original R4 adapter for the Nintendo DS, but is re-engineered to work with the new Nintendo DSi.

What can I do with an R4i Adapter for the DSi?

This R4i adapter firmware allows you to watch movies, play music, browse your pictures, read E-Books, transfer files from your computer (including the games backup roms) as well as the opportunity to run Homebrew (often free) software. Now you really can use your DSi to the fullest extent possible and with one tiny R4i memory adapter the size of an original game cartridge. that slots right into your DSi.

  • Watch movies
  • Play music
  • Browse pictures
  • Read E-Books and more…

Features:

  • R4i adapter is same size as an original DSi game cartridge
  • Built-in PassMe (NO need for any boot cart./passcard etc.)
  • Uses microSD memory card (Trans Flash) as storage
  • Boot clean dump images (downloadable from internet)
  • Very simple to use: drag and drop files to the microSD card, insert into R4i adapter for DSi and play
  • Standard FAT system support
  • Supports different speeds of micro SD cards
  • Supports HC memory cards
  • Upgradable Firmware ( OS / Bios / Kernel )
  • DSi Touch screen control and robust skinning support
  • No battery needed, back up the save file directly into the microSD card
  • Homebrew support , IO lib available on launch
  • Supports up to a MASSIVE 32Gb Flash memory card. Purchase preferred card size and insert into R4i adapter

Where can I buy the R4i Adapter for the Nintendo DSi?

Many merchants are starting to offer R4i adapter cards, however our recommendation is :

Buy the v1.4 Compatible R4i Nintendo DSi Adapter

R4i have supplied our memory cards and adapters in the past and continue to supply only official R4/R4i stock, backed up by excellent instructions for setting up the R4i adapter and locating the software and firmware for it.

Note: Older R4i cards do not work on a Nintendo DSi that has been upgraded to v1.4 Firmware. We believe that it is unlikely that an R4i firmware upgrade will be possible. The good news is that the latest R4i cards now shipping from R4i.co.uk are now compatible with the upgraded Nintendo 1.4 Firmware. If you enjoy Homebrew, but previously upgraded your Nintendo, then you can buy a new R4i and re-use your existing memory card.

As most of you will know the new Nintendo DSi console will be released on 3rd April 2009. We wrote about the launch here.

Many users of the original Nintendo DS and DS Lite preferred the convenience of having their games all loaded in one small adapter the same size as a traditional games cartridge, leaving the original games cartidges safely stored on a shelf.

The traditional R4 adapter is NOT compatible with the updated console and therefore,  you will need to purchase a compatible adapter as an add on if you don’t wish to carry all of your game cartridges around with you. Memorybits have got in ahead of the competition to order advance stock of the R4i adapter for the Nintendo DSi. It is now available for pre-order :

If you remember the scarcity of the Nintendo Wii and the Wii Fit with prices rocketing as entrepeneurs (crooks!!), tried to take advantage of the situation, then you will appreciate that this is yet another major launch with stock of add-ons  likely to fly off the shelves.

Don’t leave it too late and have to wait. If you order now, then you should be assured of getting your hands on the R4i Adapter in the next few days.

Nintendo has finally announced the launch date of the DSi, its latest handheld console, to be the first week in April 2009.

Of course the Japanese have had the pleasure of this third generation Nintendo DS since November 2008 , but the rest of the world must wait till April this year.

Australia and New Zealand get their noses in front with a 2nd April launch, UK and Europe on the 3rd, with the USA rather surprisingly lagging behind on the 5th. As the jury is still out on how successful the DSi might be, there’s no surprises that Nintendo didn’t want the joke on them and choose April 1st. Read more
