It’s a little over a week away now until the Grand National 2009 one of the best known horse races takes place.
Popular amongst many people many who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year, the Grand National is up there with the likes of Cheltenham as one of the biggest events in the racing calendar.
Picking the Grand National winner
With around 40 runners and riders on the 4th April 2009 at 4.15pm battling it out to be the 2009 winner picking that winning horse and jockey is a tough task. More often than not the favourite fails to win the race, athough last year Comply or Die did manage the task following starting the race as 7/1 joint favourite. It is just as likely for a longer odds horse to win the race such as in 2007 when the 33/1 shot Silver Birch was first past the winning post.
The reason for this is that the Grand National is a 4 mile 4 furlong race set over 30 fences, taking this into account and adding in additional factors such as horses with unseated riders running the course and the large number of fallers there is no wonder why it is such a hard race to predict.
Grand National Tips
My tip for the 2009 Grand National is to buy a paper around the time of the race, open the paper to the pages with the runners and then use one of the following methods of selection:
- Hold a pen over the paper and with your eyes closed move you hand around before dropping the pen and selecting the horse closest to the pen mark.
- Pick a horse based on the jockey and your favourite colour.
- Pick a horse based on the name that is somehow connected with your life.
- Find a small child (your own preferably!) and ask them to pick a horse.
Granted the above methods may not pick you the winning horse but they have a similar chance of doing so than anything else.
